Flak Batterie Gabelsberg

Gabelsberg was established on the high ground above Vazon Bay at Saint Germain, and fell under the control of 2/ 262. Because of its location it could also engage targets landing at Vazon or crossing La Grande Mare. Post-war quarrying destroyed much of the site, yet the command sector remains, containing a command post, searchlight bunker and a radar position. This was recently sold, and a building adjacent to the command post has been demolished. A rare type L414a casemate survives, which unlike its counterpart at Wn. Perleberg, mounted 2cm Flak to cover the marshland south-west of the site.

A local resident recalled how, near the end of the war, the site came under attack from an American fighter plane, which killed the crew of the searchlight position. The casing of this searchlight may survive, buried in a nearby field.
