Batteries were large sites that housed heavy artillery guns. They would also contain supporting structures and living areas for the crew.Β

The condition of batteries on the island varies. Some are almost entirely intact, such as Battery Mirus and Battery Scharnhorst, even Batterie Gneuisenau. Some however are almost devoid of remains, such as Elefant or Babara.
Visiting the Batteries
Visiting the Batteries
Most batteries are safe to visit, but take caution as with all sites on the island. The safest are Mirus, Scharnhorst, Strassburg, and Gneuisenau. If you follow the footpath at all you will be safe. Mirus and Scharnhorst are only open on select open days by Festung Guernsey.
