The Channel Islands were intended as naval fortresses right from the outset of the extensive fortification program. At the heart of this effort, was the establishment of 15cm SK C/28 batteries on the islands. Despite three being intended for Guernsey, Steinbruch was the only example completed. It has a sister battery on Alderney in the form of MKB Annes. Steinbruch was erected around the Les Vardes quarry, and was an expansive site built almost entirely to Fortress standard. The emplacements were unique, with a covered passage around each allowing for the loading of ammunition. The heart of the site was the two floored type M132 Leitstand command bunker, with the armored rangefinding and observation cupolas.
Unfortunately, post-war, quarrying at Les Vardes resumed, and within a short few decades almost the entire battery had been obliterated. There are few structures visible today, including an Fl242 flak bunker on the edge, and a stonecrusher (although primarily associated with the OT), while a few more structures survive on private land, including a rare M131 generator bunker and a M145 ammunition store.
