The tower overlooking Lihou can be seen from all up the West Coast, as far as Grand Rocques on a clear day. It is the only German tower on the island to be built in conjunction with an existing fortification, rather than from scratch or an addition to a mill. The tower is built on the foundations of a Victorian tower, the remains of the foundations and the nearby battery are visible, albeit on private land, unfortunately. The tower was painted in camouflage in an attempt to disguise it as the original tower, although it is doubtful that this would have deceived many people. The tower and the surrounding 'Fort Saumarez' is all on private land, and cannot be visited, unfortunately.Β Β
Tower seen during the war, the camouflage is visible as well as a tank turret gun well camouflaged.
The mounting for the tank turret is all that remains of the gun.
A steel armoured turret protrudes from the ground.
Still an imposing structure
Victorian sections still stand.
The tower can be seen from the far ends of the West Coast all the way along.
