Gneisenau, along with the sister battery Scharnhorst were named for the two German warships. Established on the raised ground inland of St. Mathews Church, along La Percee road, the battery formed an important part of the defense of Vazon and Cobo. All of the works on the site are built to Vf standards. Originally, the battery was christened HKB Cobo, but this was later changed to Gneisenau. In 1944 the battery was transfered to Jersey and became HKB Schieifflen, and Wn. Burghausen was set up at the site.
Today, a lot of the battery is visible from the road, including the impressive firecontrol tower, and three of the four emplacements. Parts of the battery are very well preserved, and the three big Vf personnel bunkers feature murals.
