Scharnhorst and her sister battery Gneisenau were named for the impressive pair of German battleships, and like their namesakes, neither were operable by the end of the war. Scharnhorst was one of two army batteries nearby to the Mirus battery, the other being Radetzsky. It comprised four 15cm K18 guns emplaced in open positions. Each position was named, (south to west) Sudetenland, Westmark, Brandenburg and Schwabenland. A network of field order and Vf structures were built surrounding each emplacement. In 1944, the guns were transferred to Jersey in order to protect the east coast of the island, and became HKB Haesler.
In 2009 Festung Guernsey cleared two of the emplacements (Schwabenland and Brandenburg) and their adjacent shelters. It has been faithfully restored. It is also worth noting that a gun either originating from Gneisenau of Scharnhorst is on display at the Occupation Museum after being recovered from the bottom of a cliff at Les Landes. The rest of the barrels from the battery remain there.
