The Festung Kommandant bunker on Guernsey is located at Stp. Tannenberg, Oberlands. It comprises of 4 Fortress Standard bunkers. The complex served a double role, as a communication hub and command. One of the two 609 bunkers at La Cobinerie are the bunkers that are the subject of this page. During wartime, the Fortress Commander would have controlled defences on Guernsey, and communicated with Jersey and Alderney to coordinate fire plans and defence strategies.Β
Both of the type 609 bunkers are spread across two levels, and connected by a short tunnel running under the road. During wartime the bunkers were camouflaged as houses, with tiled roofs and fake windows. Behind these bunkers was constructed a 25m high observation tower and radio mast, which has since been demolished. Both of these structures were demolished in 1945.Β
At present, all four fortress bunkers on the site survive. The two 609s are visible from the road, yet are used by Civil Defence and have unfortunately been completely remodelled inside, keeping none of the original markings or fittings.

This bunker is the one that commanded the entire islands defences, housing the Festung Kommandant. A tunnel runs under the road to the left, just behind the van.
