A collection of Army Coastal Batteries were erected as temporary measures, while more permanent Naval Batteries were constructed. Most remained in operation until the end of the war, excluding a small handful. Most are destroyed yet some (such as Scharnhorst and Gneisenau) survive well. A large variety of weapons were mounted in them.
