Overview

Elefant was established at Balliffs Cross and comprised mainly fieldworks, similar to the other Moerser batteries. Positioned inland with a high arc of fire, the howitzer guns could shell the coasts. A wooden tower was built to act as the firecontrol post of the battery, adjacent to a house known as 'The Paper House'. Neither the house nor the tower survive today. Several substantial shelters survive below private houses including the battery command bunker, this being an identical type to what is found at Gneisenau, Scharnhorst, Rhinozeros and Mammut.
